Talking Inclusively: December 2019

Welcome to Talking Inclusively, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about intersectionality, LGBTQ+ issues, inclusion and more! Each month we’ll offer an article on diverse topics and suggest a few questions that you can use to lead a discussion focused on how we can make space that is more welcoming to everyone.

Have feedback about how your conversation went? Run across an article you’d like us to consider? Let us know by e-mailing info@straightforequality.org.

A Queer Couple’s Plan for Dealing with Ignorant Family During the Holidays

Source: Vice

Author: Jon Paul, Ed.D.

Questions for Discussion:

  1. What was your initial reaction after reading this article? Did anything stand out to you? What did you think of the suggestions the author offers for couples generally and for queer people of color (QPOC) specifically?

  2. Does your family have any norms or traditions around the holidays that might surprise a person joining you for the first time? Do you know where those norms or traditions come from (e.g. are they cultural, religious, etc.)? If you do not spend time with family over the holidays, do you have any new, inclusive traditions that you’ve created with friends that you’d be willing to share?

  3. The author suggests that couples discuss – in advance – what questions/comments/assertions are off limits. If you feel comfortable sharing, what falls into that category for you? Your significant other? Do you think that a person’s race or ethnicity can impact what that person considers out-of-bounds?
