How does Straight for Equality differ from PFLAG?

Straight for Equality was developed for a new audience: those people who often note that they have a friend or colleague who is LGBT, but never saw themselves in an advocacy role. Its goal is to make the case as to why they should be allies, and provide them with the tools to get started. While PFLAGers often place a big emphasis on advocacy, the primary focus of Straight for Equality is on engagement.

Why are straight allies so important for PFLAG and the LGBT movement?

Straight allies have become a powerful addition to the PFLAG voice. Because there is “nothing in it for them” many people perceive allies differently than they would a PFLAG parent or a LGBT person. We need straight allies to help us make the case for equality and making PFLAG a home for allies is a great way to connect with your community and strengthen your chapter.

How can my chapter use Straight for Equality in our community?

In short, the possibilities are endless. But just in case you need a bit of inspiration, Straight for Equality has developed a series of field guides meant to help your chapter organize chapter and community wide events. Check out our resources page and don’t be afraid to contact us if you have questions.

Are there training opportunities available for our coalition partners or the community at large?

If your chapter would like to host a training opportunity for your coalition partners or for your local community please contact the Straight for Equality team at with details and any questions that you might have.

What if I have allies who are interested in advocacy?

Great! Help them get the tools they need to get engaged! Share the link and information on PFLAG’s Advocacy Center online to get started.
