Straight for Equality: Signature Programs

  • Want to be an Ally (Or Help One Out?): Straight for Equality in the Workplace: Learn how to make the case for culture change using real-life stories and examples that demonstrate how an inclusive workplace can affect the bottom line. Help your employees identify, address, and overcome some of the barriers that prevent attitude change and provide them with concrete and straightforward ways to show support for their LGBT colleagues.
  • I'm Not LGBT...Not That There's Anything Wrong with That...: Advaced Ally Skills: Find out how to effectively communicate why you’re a straight ally, get the language to articulate the business case for supporting equality and ERG engagement, and learn how to turn awkward experiences into teaching moments. Also learn about ways to reduce the issue of ally invisibility personally and within your company’s ERG.
  • The Curious Case of the Fried Ally: Beating Ally Burnout: The trajectory of ally engagement in the worplace has been meteoric, changing the face of network groups, the case for inclusion, and perceptions of the equality movement. However, once allies own their own power as changemakers the hard work begins. Living up to expectations, honoring commitments to lifelong learning, and creating thriving partnerships in networks can lead to burnout.   • Straight for Equality in the Workplace: Becoming a Trans Ally: This session will help participants focus on understanding more about transgender people and how they can become better allies to the trans community. The session educates participants on what transgender is (and isn’t), builds skills around discussing topics related to the trans community, offers important statistics on what transpeople face, and offers best practices on how to be a vocal trans ally and opportunities to try new skills on real-world scenarios.
  • Exclusive LGBT Legislative Issue Briefings: PFLAG National now offers one-hour, workplace appropriate issue briefings on topics like employment nondiscrimination legislation, laws related to bullying in schools, relationship recognition, and more. Learn what the key issues are, where potential legislation currently stands, and how those who are intersted can become further engaged. Straight for Equality: Enhancing Your Education

  • Sharing Your Workplace Story to Create Change: Discover how to develop your own personal story to inspire change. You can use your personal story as a straight ally or a LGBT person to transform hearts and minds at work, at home, and in your community.   • From the Classroom to the Boardroom: What happens to people who exhibit bullying behavior as youth when they grow up? Research suggests that schoolyard bullies often exhibit similar intimidating and exclusionary behavior in the workplace. In this session participants will discuss the similarities - and differences - between school bullying and workplace inimidation as well as learn more about what strategies are being used to address this issue in workplace.   • Be Not Afraid: Help is on the Way! Navigating LGBT Issues and Religion in the Workplace: There are few topics that cause as much stress as putting LGBT equality and religion in the same discussion. Find out how to move this debate back to a conversation, identify ways to find common ground between LGBTAs and people of faith at work, get resources to help in the effort, and even find ways to use common ground as a starting point for workplace programs that promote inclusion for LGBTAs and people of faith together.
  • Becoming a Healthcare Ally - Making the Case, Building the Skills: The LGBT community still faces signficant barriers to accessing healthcare and receiving culturally-inclusive and competent services. This session provides a detailed overview of these challenges and what they mean for patient care by making the case as to why visible and educated allies in healthcare are needed to change these trends.   • Don't Know Much About LGBT History? The Ultimate LGBT History and Culture Extravaganza:  LGBT history and culture tells the story of a vibrant, diverse, and determined community that has overcome massive barriers and deeply influenced mainstream culture. Participants will learn more about what many of the symbols, events, and references used by people who are LGBT and allies mean.   • Cultivating Respect -- Safe Schools for All: Across the country, people are becoming increasingly aware of the issues of bullying and harassment in schools. Give your colleagues the chance to learn more about the issue and why it is so closely related to attitudes about LGBT people in the workplace. Also learn simple, accessible, and effective strategies that anyone can use with their kids, friends, teachers, and school personnel to end bullying in schools.
  • Buzz: Creating It, Changing It, Managing It: Achieving a great buzz about your work and your brand is one of the keys to professional success. Learn how to identify what their buzz is, how to make it better, and the role it plays in personal, ERG, and organizational success. Examine the critical conversations that LGBT people frequently have at work and get strategies to navigate those conversations, avoid major pitfalls that may damage your buzz and how this can all help to increase understanding around LGBT issues at work.

Straight for Equality: Programs for ERG Leadership

  • ERG Leadership Development: Reaching and Engaging New Members: Llike many volunteer efforts, employee resource groups, encounter challenges in reaching new members, engaging participants, and identifying and cultivating new leaders. Drawing on more than 40 years of working with PFLAG chapters nationwide this session will ask participants to frankly discuss the way ERG business is currently conducted and to evaluate the "personality" of their group. This session will also provide effective strategies for reaching and inspiring new members, building new member recruitment into everything the group does, and cultivating leadership.   • It's Not About Counting Heads: Creating Truly Inclusive Network Groups: Culturally inclusive ERGs are better able to serve organizations, provide support to less visible populations, and create partnerships that yield great educational opportunities, dispel stereotypes, and develop inclusive workplace climates. In this session, participants will learn about why inclusion of communities of color is so important to ERG work, the role of LGBTs as allies to people of color, understand inclusion vs. diversity, take on some of the biggest challenges around inclusion outreach, brainstorm and share with other participants to create new efforts, and get the tools to start boosting inclusion in your ERG.
  • The Care and Feeding of Allies in the Workplace: Learn more about the value of  allies for your organization and effective ways to attract and engage new allies in conversations about LGBT issues. Based on research conducted by PFLAG National and Harris Interactive examine the challenges in creating a program like Straight for equality and what that means for your organization.
