The Disappearance of Lesbian Bars

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality  program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, March 11. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article: The Rise and Fall of America’s Lesbian Bars

Source: Smithsonian Magazine

Author: Sarah Marloff

Questions for Discussion:

  1. If you feel comfortable sharing, can you tell us a little bit about your experience with lesbian bars? How does it make you feel to know that so many have disappeared in recent years?

  2. In the article, it is noted that historians cannot identify the first lesbian bar in the US. Do you think that is significant? In your opinion, why is that the case?

  3. The article also notes that lesbian bars were more than just bars. Do you think it is possible to recreate spaces that fill the role that lesbian bars played in the past? If so, what would you recommend to young organizers and activists?
