Casting Queer Roles in TV and Film

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, October 1. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article: Why should queer performers play queer roles? Authenticity of experience

Source: San Francisco Chronicle Datebook

Author: Tony Bravo

Questions for Discussion:

  1. After reading this article do you agree with the author’s assertion that LGBTQ characters in television and film should be “portrayed by actors who have lived these experiences?” Why or why not?
  2. As a viewer, do you feel as if you’re able to clock straight actors playing queer characters or spot affected “gayness?” And how do you feel about this concept?
  3. What impact do you think seeing straight, cisgender actors portray queer characters has on the LGBTQ+ community? What about the impact on people who are not LGBTQ+ identified? And how does this differ from the impact of queer actors in queer roles?
