The Disappearance of LGBTQ+ Newspapers

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, September 17. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Have feedback about how your conversation went? Let us know by emailing [email protected].

Questions for Discussion:

  1. What role has LGBTQ+ media played in your life? In your opinion, what role do LGBTQ+ media, publications, and newspapers play in the lives of queer folks in the US and around the world? Is it more than just reporting news?

  2. The article notes that while at one time there were hundreds of LGBTQ+ publications in the US – in 2020 it is down to about 100, which includes only 11 weeklies. Why do you think that is the case? Is this trend likely to continue?

  3. Media has changed dramatically. What can people who are LGBTQ+ and allies do to support LGBTQ+ media? Is there anything specific you would recommend in 2020?
